Every month, Microsoft’s OSS Fund supports an open source project with $10,000. Microsoft employees select the project.
For two years, Microsoft has regularly donated money to open source projects. Every month, €10,000 flows to an open source project from the OSS Fund, which was launched in 2020. The recipient is up to all Microsoft employees who work on an open source project themselves.
The May 2022 prize goes to the Gnome project, a Linux desktop used by default in Ubuntu, Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Emma Irwin from Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office made the announcement on Twitter. Other winners over the past two years have included OpenStreetMap, virtualizer Qemu, visualization library for Python matplotlib, MSYS2, an environment for easily building Windows applications, and systemd. Nominations for the June award winner are currently underway.
