Smartphones: Qualcomm's reference cell phone is delayed with updates

Qualcomm’s flagship cell phone &quot ;Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” only gets late updates for android and security level. This is reported by users of the mobile phone built by Qualcomm and Asus in a Reddit thread that was picked up by several US media.

The latest security update was published in March, writes a user on Reddit. It was the January security patch. In practice, the security level of the Qualcomm smartphone is six months old – a possible security risk. Qualcomm and Asus also lag behind when it comes to Android updates. Qualcomm’s reference smartphone is still running Android 11, which was installed when it was launched last summer.

“Regular security updates”

The Android magazine xda-Developers points out that Qualcomm and Asus will still have “regular security updates” had promised. In response to the Reddit thread and the coverage, a Qualcomm community manager promised a new security patch on June 20th. It is unclear which patch this will be.

According to the community manager, future security updates should appear every two to three months. However, Qualcomm still does not state when Android 12 will come to the reference smartphone.

The Qualcomm cell phone for Snapdragon insiders should primarily demonstrate the performance of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. In addition to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, the phone has 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal flash memory. Qualcomm and partner Asus demanded expensive 1300 euros for this. The smartphone is no longer officially sold in Germany.
